Negro Dialect and Color-Blindness: The Need for Black Political Independence

This is another edition of Politikin with The G-Man The Chris Matthews statement (below) last night got people talking...

This is what The G-Man had to say...

"Last night in the wake of President Obama’s first State of the Union address, MSNBC host Chris Matthews remarked that in the midst of the President’s prose, he “forgot he was black for an hour.” This remark immediately caught the attention of all who were watching and Matthews attempted later to clarify his remarks, stating that he simply meant the nation’s first black President was addressing a room full of whites with his race being a non-issue for them. However, when you add this comment to last week’s firestorm and subsequent glossing over of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s comment that Obama would make a suitable presidential candidate because he “lightskinned” and “spoke with no Negro dialect, unless he chose to,” the existence of a real problem is becoming clear; too many black people will let others say whatever they want about us as long as they’re Democrats.

Both comments represent the subtle, condescending racism prevalent amongst white liberals. To paraphrase comedian and excellent social commentator Chris Rock, he’s the President of the United States, a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, how exactly is Obama supposed to sound when he speaks? The mere fact that Senator Reid and Chris Matthews appear stunned that a black person can speak intelligently displays a level of ignorance which wouldn’t be tolerated from Senator Mitch McConnell or Bill O’Reilly from the other side of the spectrum (remember “Where’s my muthafuckin’ Iced Tea?”) But I know black Democrats, we’re supposed to put their comments “in context” and give them a pass because massa has been so good to us. But have they really?

The black community routinely votes Democrat 90+% of the time and has made it clear their fierce loyalty to the party is unflappable. But a close look at our communities in the time since blacks became the most stable voting bloc for that party shows little return on that commitment. The sweeping of Senator Reid’s and the coming sweeping of Chris Matthews comments under the rug is a symptom of a much larger problem with blacks and politics; the giving away of all of our political capital. What incentive do the Democrats have to make sure blacks are rewarded for their loyalty? Blacks have demonstrated that no matter what happens to their community, no matter which legislation is passed or not passed, they will not vote for anyone that doesn’t have a “D” next to their name. So even if the Democrats don’t live up to campaign promises, at worst blacks will simply sit out the next election. Either way it’s one vote that won’t go to the other side so as a Democratic politician, why should I work to help your community or live up to the promises I’ve made? What are you gonna do about it? Blacks have put themselves in a position where they have zero political capital. The GOP has given up on ever gaining our support and the Democrats take our support for granted because they know either they get our vote or no one does.

A friend of mine said a person’s vote should always be for sale. There should be certain requirements to get and it should go to whoever fulfills those requirements. If blacks want increased attention to their plight from politicians, more political independence is needed. Quit equating blackness with a propensity for voting Democrat and demand that any politician who wants a vote from us delivered is going to address our problems and treat us with respect, regardless of the letter after their name."

Obama (The Man) Eyebrows, Hands & Smile...

I was thoroughly impressed with Obama's State of the Union Address last night. I have a soft spot for this man every since I saw him speak at the DNC in Boston circa 2004. Some notable quotes...

"We can’t allow financial institutions, including those that take your deposits, to take risks that threaten the whole economy."

"Because of the Recovery Act, there are about two million Americans working right now who would otherwise be unemployed."

"The nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy. And America must be that nation."

*Side note: My homegirl Erin pointed out how big Obama's hands are...also notice the panty-dropping eyebrows

Twitty Tuesday - "The Winter Escape"

When it's freezing cold in New York, most of us try to think of a place we could "escape to". Well, why not make the dream or idea of going to a warm paradise come true this week? I'm sure most of us would be able to take 2 days off work, right? I'm sure some of us are also getting some tax returns, right? If you could take a flight this Wednesday night, land in paradise by Thursday, enjoy the sun for 4 days and come back to New York City on Sunday night, where would you go? Here is my top 5 list...

1) Costa Rica - flights to San Jose, Costa Rica, are only $340 right now! Why not go to Costa Rica this Wednesday night and enjoy 4 days of surfing at the beach, exploring the tropical rain forest and sweating it up with some white water rafting? Not to mention that it's 85 degrees right now. You can enjoy sailing, turtle watching, the butterfly farms and mountain biking. Oh ya, be sure to try some fried plantains at the end of the day as well because Costa Ricans have one of the best recipes.

2) St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands - Flights are about $355 right now! The temperature is 84 degrees. This is the kind of place where I would spend all day and night at the beach. Let's all kick off our sandals, dip our feet in the sand, sip on our fruity alcoholic beverage and hopefully see a dolphin jump up from under the water... ahhhhh... Paradiiiiise... Not to mention that snorkeling in St. Thomas is supposed to be incredible as well. It is the perfect place to go with someone special.

3) Montego Bay, Jamaica - If Stella Got Her Groove Back then so can everybody else dammit. Flights are about $340 for Wednesday and $380 for Thursday. I can already taste the delicious Jamaican meat patties and the star fruit desserts. As soon as you get off the plane I recommend buying some rum, loading up on the reggae music and just chilling at the beach until Sunday. You honestly don't even need a hotel room. It's so nice and hot that you can just sleep on the beach, swim, dance and enjoy the 90-DEGREE weather!

4) Barbados - Flights are $390. This is definitely going to be more of a peaceful escape, where you can enjoy the beach, water sports, snorkeling and jazz. Barbados is known for its world-class dining as well. The island has some of the best-cooked fish because of the special blend of herbs and spices known as the Barbados seasoning or Bajan seasoning. The island is so tiny that you can explore it within one day. What better time to do it than in 86-degree weather...

5) Turks and Caicos Islands - Flight costs $430 to Providenciales. For a romantic, upscale, honeymoon-type trip, I recommend going to Providenciales. The sight-seeing is breathtaking and there are plenty of restaurants, places to shop, tours and excursions, art galleries and outdoor sports to enjoy. It is 85 degrees and a bottle of champagne is waiting at the hotel and ready to be opened.

10 Reasons Why Its Better to be Single

1) You can create your own schedule

I hear/see this all the time. People in relationships constantly have to check with their significant other before committing to plans. Its the equivalent of having strict parents in high school

2) You can look AND touch

I think that one is self explanatory

3) Facebook & Twitter are Fun & not Threatening

ie "WHY DID THAT BITCH WRITE THAT SHIT ON YOUR WALL?"

4) You can actually enjoy your "girls only" or "just the guys" vacation

This is sad because this is actually something human beings need. Everyone needs time away with friends without your significant other. Its the definition of healthy. I do notice the girl with a boyfriend (me included at one point) is always the one on the phone arguing while the rest of the single ladies are out enjoying themselves

5) You don't have to "check in"

Your text messages no longer look like a GPS system

6) You will be prosperous at work

You no longer have to feel guilty for leaving on a business trip or staying in the office late. You shouldn't feel remorse for all the hard work you've been putting in. Its your damn job

7) You can spend the holidays the way you want to

You will finally understand the phrase "Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"

8) You don't have to have pointless arguements for the sake of arguing

Couples are constantly arguing & testing one another. It has a lot to do with trust & insecurities. Half the time they don't even remember how the argument even started

9) You can have your own opinion Me Vs. We

Lets just look at the exact definition of "opinion"...shall we: a personal view, attitude, or appraisal (via dictionary.com)

10) Last but not least...You can finally be yourself again
